What's so special about The Bible?
"Worth every minute. So inspiring and empowering!" and "An amazing morning. I can't wait to get back to school and put some ideas into practice!" These were just some of the comments following the recent training lead by Barnabas (the schools' arm of the Bible Reading Fellowship).
The training had been specifically tailored to support schools during the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible, so the Diocesan Education Team took advantage of the offer of a free half-day training session designed for schools, exploring how to teach about The Bible in religious education lessons.
A total of 36 schools from across Cornwall - Church and community - were represented.
Teaching children about The Bible can be fun, interactive, creative but also tricky. Those teachers present at the training were certainly thrilled to be able to experience a range of teaching styles ranging from drama to ‘brain gym'; and then from ‘conscience alley' work to the quiet and reflective ‘Story of the story' - simply telling the story, through a storyboard time-line, of how The Bible evolved and came to be written.

Windows into the Christian Faith
A group from the Diocese and the Methodist District are producing a set of short courses on Christian basics which can be run in local churches, deaneries or circuits. The series is called ‘Windows into the Christian Faith'.
Windows into the Bible - the Old Testament, and Windows into the Bible - the New Testament, are already available and have been used quite widely.
Two more are in production and will be available for use in autumn 2011 - Windows into Church History and Windows into Christian Ethics. Windows into Christian Doctrine and Windows into Spirituality and Worship will follow as soon as possible, and there may be more after that.
These are six-week, PowerPoint courses, each lasting two hours per session. They are designed for use in groups with a local leader. Everything that is needed is supplied on a single disk. There is teaching, some discussion, some ‘activities' and coffee in the middle.
Nobody is forced to join in and say or do anything unless they want to, and the aim is simply to make accessible some of the basics of the Christian Faith. We really want to open windows into these big topics, so that you can enjoy and appreciate the view! Each course costs only £10 per person, and that money goes towards the production and development costs.
