The Executive and Decision-making structure
The Executive acts as the Bishop's Council and Standing Committee of the Diocesan Synod (meeting under the chairmanship of the Bishop); and as the board of directors and trustees of the Company (meeting under the chairmanship of the Chairman of the Company).
The Executive includes five ex officio members - the Diocesan and Suffragan Bishops, the Dean and the two Archdeacons; the Chairman of the Company, the Chairman of the House of Clergy and the Chairman of the House of Laity; the Vice Chairmen of the Formation, Proclamation and Education Practitioner Groups (if the Diocesan Bishop is the Chairman); and four clergy and four lay members elected by Diocesan Synod. Furthermore, up to two members can be co-opted by the Executive with the approval of the Bishop. All elected members of the Executive may serve for a maximum of six years before standing down for at least one year, but may stand for re-election thereafter.
Decision-making structure
Diocesan Synod has delegated the following functions to the Executive:
- Planning the business of Synod including the preparation of agendas and papers
- Initiation of proposals for action by Diocesan Synod and provision of policy advice
- Transacting business of the Diocesan Synod when not in session
- Management of the funds and property of the Diocese
- Preparation of annual estimates of expenditure
- Advising on action needed to raise necessary income necessary
- Oversight of expenditure by bodies in receipt of Diocesan Synod's funds against estimates of expenditure approved by Diocesan Synod
- Advising Diocesan Synod of the financial aspects of its policy & on any other matters referred to it
- Appointing members of committees or nominating members for election to committees, subject to the directions of Diocesan Synod
- Carrying out any other functions delegated by Diocesan Synod.
The Company has responsibility for the day-to-day financial management of the Diocese.
