The Cathedral
The Diocese of Truro is part of the Church of England. It is organised into geographical units called parishes with a Mother Church known as the cathedral. The Bishop and the Suffragan Bishop have oversight of the Diocese.
The specific relationship that the Cathedral has with the Bishop of Truro and the Parishes (Diocese) is outlined below:
The Cathedral and the Bishop of Truro
The word Cathedral derives from the word ‘Cathedra' which is Greek for the Bishop's seat. The Cathedral is the Bishop's Church and is a centre of worship and mission.
- The Bishop takes services at the Cathedral and this includes preaching at the Christmas Day and Easter Day services.
- The Dean of Truro is the senior priest in the Diocese, head of the cathedral foundation and part of the Bishop's Senior Staff.
- The Bishop is the Cathedrals ‘Visitor' thus giving certain privileges and rights to the Bishop.
The Cathedral and the Parishes
The Cathedral is the Bishop's principal seat for teaching and leading his people. As the Mother Church of the diocese this is expressed practically by:
- The Cathedral welcoming parishes and deaneries (groups of parishes in a geographical area) to the cathedral for visits and services
- The Cathedral hosting a large number of diocesan wide events such as Ordinations, Confirmations, Synods, Diocesan Choral Festival, Wholeness & Healing Day, Clergy Training days, Youth Events and Exhibitions, etc
- The Cathedral Clergy often taking services in parish churches
- The Archdeacon of Cornwall being a member of the Cathedral Chapter
- The Archdeacon of Bodmin being a member of the Finance Committee
- Parish Priests and Lay people being invited to become Canons of the Cathedral
- The Canon Precentor of the Cathedral also being the Diocesan Liturgical Advisor
