Opportunities for Training and Development

Bishop Tim writes:

'I am very grateful to all those who have agreed to contribute in any way to the coming year's offering of Continuing Ministerial Education and Development.

It was very good to see so many Clergy, Readers and others at the study days in 2011 and I do hope you will have put the dates in your diary for next year.  We are very fortunate to have acquired both Martyn Percy and Margaret Barker to come and work with us.  Martyn is a very able communicator and his topic is significant given the changes that are happening in the church.

Margaret is a fascinating Old Testament scholar who has done much to unearth and discover a greater understanding of how the temple and its cult operated and has gone on to develop theories which help explain something of the atonement .  I am sure both days will be worthwhile and hope you can all be at them.

The main thrust of the year, other than the two study days, is all about leadership.  Given the changes that are occurring so quickly I am well aware of the need to help all of us think again about how we lead and what leadership means.  We are going to have to change a lot of the way we operate and I do understand how difficult that is for many of us.  It is therefore important for us to endeavour to offer as much help as we can for people to think through both what their vocation means and how we can and should offer leadership into a rapidly changing situation.

As Paula Gooder pointed out so helpfully the word ‘disciple' means a learner and we are all lifelong learners.

I am very grateful to Paul for all the hard work he puts in to organising and administering the courses and events advertised in this brochure.  I do urge us all to take advantage of the range of very good opportunities on offer to help us with our learning.'

Training Opportunities and Booking

Bishop Tim writes (15th November 2010):

"2011 is the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible. It is no surprise therefore that there is a significant focus on scripture and its interpretation in this year's CMED programme. I am very grateful to Paul for all his imagination and hard work in putting such a wide ranging and good quality series of events.

Can I especially encourage you to notice, and if at all possible attend the days being held by Richard Burridge and Paula Gooder. We are very fortunate to have them both with us in the county this coming year and I hope this style of day, being led by nationally renowned theologians, will be one we will continue in coming years. Both Steve Wild and I have written to all authorised ministers in both our Churches to invite them to come and learn together with Richard and Paula.

The whole programme is under the heading Continuing Ministerial Education and Development. All of us need to go on learning, if we are not learners then we are not true to ourselves and the promises we took when we were licensed, ordained or authorised for ministry. But as well as learning we also need to go on developing our whole selves, and so it is good to see a number of events this year focussing on wellbeing and helping us ensure we are developing and giving us tools to aid that development and journey towards becoming mature disciples.

Thank you to all those who help in any way to put this programme together and please do take advantage of these opportunities."
