Migrant Workers

Over recent years Cornwall has seen a significant influx of workers from overseas into the Cornish Economy.  ‘Migrant Workers' can be found within agriculture, food production, leisure, nursing homes, education, hospitals and many other occupations. Their countries of origin include Eastern Europe, Philippines, Mexico, Portugal.  Stricter regulations now apply to immigration from non-EU nations. Contact the Border and Immigration Agency for the latest information.

Cornwall Council though its Social Inclusion team have produced an excellent booklet packed with useful local information for anyone new to Cornwall. It is available in four languages...Polish, Portuguese, Russian and...English.  This booklet is available here. Hard copies of the booklet are available from SRO team at Diocesan House or from Inclusion Cornwall 01872 355128

Occasionally there has been abuse of migrant workers over their working rights. The Gangmasters Licensing Authority regulates some of the industires in which MWs work and their website carries up to date information.  The Trade Unions have also been active in protecting the rights of such vulnerable workers Contact them by sending an email here

Information sheet on organising a welcome evening

Guides to local towns

Let's talk resources and supporting materials for working with children and young people are available at Bridging Arts.

I packed it myself.

This project features a series of suitcases that reflect the objects that Migrant Workers from Eastern Europe and Portugal brought when they came to the UK. These objects promote a deeper understanding about the challenges and issues faced by those coming to live and work in Cornwall.

Faith Centre

Dor Kemmyn - Common Ground

A Faith Centre for Cornwall

The need for a Faith Centre in Cornwall has come from meetings of the Cornwall Faith Forum.  The Faith Forum was established in 2006 to provide a voice for the worshipping faith communities in Cornwall.

The purpose of a Faith Centre would be to support existing faith communities with a space for prayer and worship, promote understanding and awareness between the different faiths and provide an education resource for the county.  A working group has been looking into the various aspects of developing and establishing the centre.

The Centre will reflect the different aspects of the faiths, with the aim of fulfilling:

  • A place of worship for all faiths.
  • A resource for delivering cultural diversity training to statutory and voluntary organisations.
  • A resource for educational purposes with schools and colleges, to support the teaching and learning.
  • A resource for children, young people and adults to develop their awareness and understanding of faith and diversity.
  • To promote networking between faith groups (Inter-faith meetings).
  • To deliver a programme of community events to encourage greater understanding of the various faiths.
  • To provide a meeting and discussion space for different faith groups and other community groups
  • A place where traditional religious festivals can be honoured and celebrated.

For further information and how to get involved please e-mail Dor Kemmyn by clicking here or contact either the Inter faith Development Worker, Rita Stephen or  Andrew Yates. Tel 01872 247213.  The Dor Kemmyn website can be viewed here.
