Fairtrade
What is Fairtrade? Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
We're a Fairtrade Diocese!
Truro Diocese began the process of becoming a Fair Trade diocese in November 2007. In order to achieve the status we were required to fulfil the following requirements.
- To support and promote Fairtrade, further encourage the use and sale of Fairtrade products and to serve only Fairtrade coffee and tea at meetings for which it is responsible .
- Ensure that one half of the churches in our denominational area have become a ‘Fairtrade Church'
- Encourage other local churches, parishes, circuits etc. to adopt Fairtrade policy. As far as possible, display literature advertising the fact that Fairtrade products are used and served there.
- Attract media coverage and continue raising awareness of the FAIRTRADE Mark. If possible, make reference to denominational area's Fairtrade status on the relevant website.
- Set up a Fairtrade steering group to take responsibility for monitoring that goals continue to be met and developed over time.
We finally achieved Fairtrade Status in July 2010!
If your church isn't a Fair Trade Church please bring it to the attention of your PCC.
In order to obtain a Fair Trade status your PCC must agree to the following:
- Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and in all meetings for which you have responsibility.
- Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar, biscuits and fruit.
- Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year through events, worship and other activities whenever possible.

Fairtrade Prayer
Gracious God,
You call us to strive for justice and fairness
in everything we do.
Keep before us a vision of a world
freed from the scandal of poverty,
where trade is just
and people and communities can flourish.
We give thanks for those parish communities
whose support and commitment
has helped us to become
a Fairtrade Diocese.
Keep us alert to the cry of the poor.
Increase among us those who
would make a difference in your world.
And may the fair trade movement
continue to transform the lives
of poor producers in the developing world.
May we never grow weary in serving your kingdom
and embracing your call upon our lives,
alone and together. Amen
