Churchyards
Headstones & Memorials. The parish Churchyard is much more than a unique history of place and people. Because its space has been protected, often through many hundreds of years, the Churchyard is frequently also a rare conservation area, where substantial numbers of species of plants and wildlife have continued to develop, unhindered by predator or chemicals.
Consequently, it is not surprising that care needs to be taken to tend and preserve the environment which speaks of the past, and to ensure that such additions, like gravestones, as are made in our generation do not seem out of keeping with what is often a uniquely rural environment. For these reasons, there are rules governing what can and can not be placed in Churchyards, which remain above all else places where earlier generations can rest at peace.
