Chancel Repair Liability Land and Owners
Historically, the owner of certain land in a Parish had the legal responsibility to maintain the Chancel of the Parish Church. That is the part of the Church, usually at the East end, where the altar stands.
There is no central record of which land in a Parish is subject to this liability and discovering whether your property is subject to this liability is very difficult. You should take advice from your own solicitor and consider whether you should purchase insurance to cover this liability.
Because there are no central records, the Church has no way of helping you to find out whether your property is subject to this liability or not.
