Stewardship

Stewardship is potentially a very broad idea. It ranges from a concern for all creation to our own care of the things we call ours - money and possessions.

"What we do with our money proclaims who we think we are - whether we know it or not, whether we like it or not. All our actions in some degree reveal us; why should our economic life be different? Why should this too not be an area in which we help to shape our eternal destiny, a matter of sin or holiness?"
Archbishop Rowan Williams

Archbishop Rowan Williams and Bishop Tim

Most often when we mention stewardship in church we are referring to our giving and the care of the financial resources of the church, and how these are used for mission and service. This means that money is not something dirty, only to be spoken of when it is a problem, but a tool that can be used for good or ill.

Stewardship is part of our life as Christians, as the quote from Archbishop Rowan shows. It is not a once a year occasion, although it is helpful to review our giving annually. Awareness of our need and desire to respond to the generosity of God in our giving, and what this enables to happen, can be brought into worship, especially at the offertory. Indeed our giving is an act of worship.

Our giving is a response to a generous and loving God: what we give resources God's purposes in and through the Church.
