Plans for the Cornish version of the national ‘More than Gold' Olympic initiative are gathering momentum. Make sure you are ready to join in and ‘Pass on the Light'.

On Saturday 19 May, the Olympic Torch will arrive at Land's End and be carried on its route through Cornwall to Plymouth.

Bishop Tim and the Revd Steve Wild will kindle our own Prayer Torch to symbolise the Gospel coming into Cornwall with the first Celtic missionaries.  From this Prayer Torch, 12 symbolic miners' lamps will be lit - one for each Deanery.

The miners' lamps will arrive at each Deanery collection point by 10am on Saturday 19 May so that a representative from each parish can bring a candle or lamp to ignite and collect their own Olympic Prayer Flame to take to back to their church.

Collection point locations available to download below.

Parishes may choose to keep this flame alight for the whole of the following week until the Ecumenical Celebration at Gwennap Pit on Sunday 27 May; or simply use it as the focal point of a Day of Prayer on Sunday 20 May, with special focus on revival of the Christian faith in Cornwall.

It is hoped that, by the time the Olympic Torch has crossed Cornwall, every parish church will have its own little Olympic Prayer Flame shining to symbolise the sharing of the Gospel message.

Saturday 19 May will also see the Great Cream Tea Challenge, which can, of course, be a part of bigger events too. A special challenge has been given to Cornwall that on 19 May we should serve (and record) more cream teas than have ever been served before in one day and that this accomplishment should be recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.

These cream teas should be used for outreach not ‘fund-raising' and Rodda's have kindly offered to provide cream for churches at a generously reduced price. The ‘More than Gold' national team can provide special booklets to accompany the cream teas.

To register your church and to order your supply of cream - which will be available from the same Deanery collection point as the Prayer Flame - contact Doreen Sparey-Delacassa at doreen.sd@btinternet.com as soon as possible.

On Friday 25 & Saturday 26 May, Bishop Tim and Steve Wild will be inviting anyone and everyone to join them as they Walk The Saints Way. This is an opportunity to stride out and share the Gospel in hale and hearty - not to mention healthy - fashion.

Approximate times and locations are available to download below. For any further information about the Saints Way Walk please contact The Revd Anne Brown on ladockrectory@btinternet.com

Finally, the Feast of the Pentecost (Whitsunday) on Sunday 27 May will see an ecumenical Celebration at Gwennap Pit at 3pm when the preacher will be the Revd Leo Osborne, president of the Methodist Church.

These are the core events in which churches in the Diocese of Truro are being encouraged to participate, but it is hoped that each parish or Deanery will organise their own local events and activities aimed to reflect the Olympic theme at various times during the Summer.
