Diocesan Advisory Committee

The Committee is appointed under the Care of Churches and Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Measure 1991, primarily to offer advice to Parochial Church Councils (PCCs) and to the Chancellor of the Diocese about proposed works to church buildings and churchyards.

These include the grant of faculties, the archaeology, architecture, art and history of such places and the use and care of their contents and of their churchyards and burial grounds. The committee also takes action to encourage the care and appreciation of all such places.

Both Archdeacons are ex officio members of the Committee, the other fourteen members, one of whom is an elected member of Diocesan Synod, and one appointed by the Diocesan Executive Committee, consist of experts in archaeology, architecture, bells, clocks, furnishings, glazing, organs, paintings, ceramics, medieval church history, archives, memorials especially brasses. In addition there are others advisers who specialise in heating and lighting, ecology, sound systems, gold and silver work, needlework, the natural environment and path surfacing.  All these people offer their considerable skills on a voluntary basis.

The Bishop's Council makes additional appointments after consultation with relevant bodies such as the National Amenity Societies, English Heritage and The Association of County Councils. The guide to faculty applications provides further information on procedure, and guidance notes on a wide range of topics along with useful names and addresses.
