Legacies and Donations
Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren Proverbs 13:22
Perhaps to that we should add, "and to their church and favourite charities".
Making a will and leaving a legacy to the church and to causes close to our hearts enables places and work that we think are important to continue into the next generation and beyond. Yet more than 50% of people fail to make a will. This causes much distress to family and friends who have to sort out the affairs of someone who didn't make a will. It also means that our resources may end up being distributed in a way that we would not have preferred.
As Christians we should not be afraid to speak of death and the hope of eternal life in Christ. As stewards of all that God has given us it is wise to consider prayerfully and carefully what happens after we die to those resources which God has entrusted to our care.
The Church of England nationally has produced a range of resources to encourage the making of wills. These can be found at the Church Legacy website. A link to the leaflet introducing the principle of making a will "50% of adults" may be found below.
It is advisable to seek the services of a solicitor experienced in wills and probate, as home made wills often create more problems and need experienced legal help to sort out.
