Works instructed by you
When instructing works for which you are responsible, in order to protect yourself, please be aware of Health and Safety.
You need to ensure that anyone undertaking works is professionally competent. This is particularly important when working at height e.g. cleaning windows or gutters or painting staircases. Other significant hazards could include drilling into materials that have an asbestos content or working in the vicinity of electrical or gas installations.
Before appointing a contractor, you should:
- Confirm any instructions in writing and this should include a description of what is to be done, when the work is to start and the date by which work is to be completed
- Obtain itemised estimated costs, and whether or not VAT is payable
- Confirm the contractor's responsibilities in accordance with current health and safety regulations and recommendations. Any significant health and safety risks of which you are aware should be pointed out. A health and safety method statement should be prepared for any unusual, recurrent or hazardous works. The contractor should provide a written statement saying what he is to do and how he is to control risks
- Request certificates to show trade body recognition and professional competence.
- Note that properly established contractors will have public liability insurances and health and safety policies. These should be made available to you before any instruction is issued
For any significant works the Parsonage Department must be informed, and must have given permission for the works, notifying insurers as required.
