Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

'Protecting all God's Children' - Advice on protecting children and vulnerable adults and developing good practice

The Church of England's Child Protection policy ‘Protecting all God's Children' has, as its first principle ‘We are committed to the safeguarding, care and nurture of the children within our church community'

The Diocese of Truro wholeheartedly endorses this and wishes to provide support, advice and information to all those in its parishes who give of their time, both paid and voluntarily, to work with children and young people. Our Diocesan policies, guidelines for good practice and procedures are contained in the booklet ‘Responsible Caring'.

The Diocese has a Safeguarding Committee and runs training throughout the diocese on important aspects of Safeguarding.

All parishes must have an up to date Parish Safeguarding Policy and have appointed Safeguarding Coordinators for both Vulnernable Adults and Children. It is these coordinators, along with the Parish Priest who have responsibility in the first instance, for safeguarding in your parish.

The Diocesan Safeguarding Officer, Sarah Acraman welcomes queries and comments and is available to offer support. advice or take the lead where necessary.

Safeguarding Children Training

This year's timetable for Safeguarding Children training is below. There have been some changes to how we deliver our safeguarding training, so please read the following carefully.

In line with the Government's requirements, LEVEL 1 content includes understanding what constitutes abuse and neglect, recognition of it, and what to do in response to concerns.

Many of you will have completed a course such as this within the last 3 years.

If you have and can provide evidence of your attendance, then you do not need to do LEVEL 1 at this time. LEVEL 1training does not need to have been provided by the Diocese.

LEVEL 1 safeguarding Children training is now provided through e-Learning. The Local Authority has made this available to all within the church who work at any level with children. The course is called ‘Introduction To Safeguarding Children'

In order to access the e-learning, you will need the use of a computer for up to about three hours.

Level 1 is accessed by emailing Esther Pollard. Click here to send Esther an email.

LEVEL 2 safeguarding Children training is only open to those who are up to date with LEVEL 1. (Click here for more information on the LEVEL 1 training)

Those who are up to date with their LEVEL 1 training (and can provide the evidence) are free to access LEVEL 2.

LEVEL 2 covers safeguarding issues in more depth. You will look at your own role, the church context, recording and sharing information and the management of sexual offenders. This training is a requirement for all who have a ‘lead responsibility' for young people and children within any church work or activities, Safeguarding Children Coordinators and clergy who are not yet up to date with their safeguarding training.

You are considered to be ‘up to date' if you have completed LEVEL2 of the diocesan training in the last three years. It is open to all who have completed a LEVEL 1 course.

CRB Applications

It is our Diocesan Policy to check all relevant volunteers through a Disclosure.  We ask them to carry out an Enhanced Disclosure.  It is for those who may have contact with children, young people or vulnerable adults through a Regulated Activity.  This is any activity of a specified nature that involves contact with children or vulnerable adults frequently (once a week or more), intensively (for 4 days or more in a 30 day period) or overnight (anytime between 2am and 6am).

ISA Registration was supposed to be coming in Summer 2010 but at the last minute the government sent a directive stopping the process for the time being.  Please therefore ignore Section d of the form.
